It's a fairly simple job to create a GED file without notes, one thing to bear in mind with GED files though, they are text only so if you have images that you want to show someone then you would need to send those via e-mail.

Just one thought re tranferring a gedcom from FTW to GR, be careful of personal notes that are also transferred...especially for living people.
It's a bit of a pain having to remove them from each name when you update on GR but worth it.

You can upload a Gedcom file from your offline tree programme to GR so people can still see your tree.

You can download some freebie programmes or budget for up to £10 for FTM 2006 if you buy online.

FTM would also allow you to have a free site you could update and add images, books and reports to as well.

Either way round you could quite easily save any potential disasters with data loss for very little money and the cost is well worth it.

Don't even bother trying to add to the GR tree directly, better to use a software programme and then transfer the info (if you must) to GR via a GEDCOM file.

The GR tree builder is pretty useless when it is workong and a nightmare when it isn't, if you don't keep your tree on another format then you risk losing the whole lot because of access issues like those you describe.

Use a programme and make regular backup copies of the file, keep those safe, the fact that you then don't need to be online and have protection against data loss if your computer fails are worth far more than the "convenience" of an online tree builder and it a programme costs less than a years membership on here

l am so mad...for 2 days now....as l am adding people to my tree...l press saving details and get " Sorry..there was a problem connecting to the Genes site". When l go back to it...l have to start all over again! Then it does it again. l came off it yesterday....tried again today...and it let me add 2 people...and then it went off again!! Has anyone else had this problem? If so...how maddening is this!!And what are they doing about it?
