If you use the familysearch website to look at the 1881 you do get the relationships and can check out the neighbours easily - although you can't see the images.

Thanks Jeanette

Madeley is riddled with Gregory's !! Its definately him as all the siblings and parents match and ages.

There is something not quite right with his childrens ages and the time of his marriage .. I smell a rat or a previous marriage. Later on grandchildren and nephews appear from nowhere and then dissapear.

Thanks again.

On 1881 he is definitely down as being unmarried if you are correct that it is definitely your William. However in 1891 he is still single living with his father George but his mother is now down as Hannah. In 1901 he is married to Mary A and still living in Shropshire.

What information do you have to verify who and when he married?

Jean

Take that back. You are right Jim - there are two William Gregorys. Have had another look and in 1891 the one not living with his parents George and Hannah is living with his wife Mary Jane in Shropshire.

Thanks everyone .. this is what I know to date.

1871 Census
Dawley, Salop
(information taken from the son of Esther)

George .. Head .. 47
Sarah .. Wife .. 46
Richard .. son .. 20
Mary A .. Daur .. 15
William .. Son .. 12 ***
Sarah .. Daur .. 9
John .. Son .. 6
Edward .. Son 4

.............................................................

1891 Census
Madeley, Salop
(all family members known of)

William .. Head .. 34
Sarah .. Wife .. 31.................nee Smith
William .. Son .. 12................born Madeley
Mary Ann .. Daur .. 11............born Pontefract, Yorkshire
Sarah .. Daur .. 9...................born Pontefract, Yorkshire
Florence .. Daur .. 7...............born Pontefract, Yorkshire
Esther Ellen .. Daur .. 2..........born Madeley

.....................................................................................

1901 Census

Family moved to Pressall, Lancashire and is correct.

......................................................................................

There seems something fishy as I can find births for Mary Ann, Sarah and Florence as Gregory's in Pontefract for the relevant dates but can't find them on the 1881 census in Pontefract. There is also little I can find out in later life for these. They all dissappear after the 1891 census but would be of an age to leave home I suppose.

I have spent hours and the following names all have Mary, Sarah and Florence's born in Pontefract that would fit. Thinking along the lines that the eldest 4 children were from a previous marriage and that is why I can't find a marriage for William Gregory and Sarah 'Smith'.

Asquith
Booth
Brown
Gregory **
Higgins
Naylor
Robinson
Thompson
Thornton
Ward
Wilson
Wright

Wish me luck and any help gratefully received !!

Haved checked marriage with the above names and come up with zip !!

Think I am going to have to order a birth certificate .. which would be best ot go for .. one of the Pontefract children or a child born later do you think.

Hi Jim

Both William Gregory's were born the same quarter (Dec) and year 1858 .. one in 'Wem' (Wollerton one) and the other in 'Madeley' but on the 1861 census the ages are shown 2 years apart.

I disscounted the following one because the age did not match

... And the correct 1861
William Gregory John,Ann abt 1857 Wolterton, Shropshire, England Son Wollerton, Shropshire ...

Think there has been an error with the ages on the census but I hope not or my whole tree is wrong :-(

Thanks

The only name I can bring it up under is Basit which if you zoom in is actually Basil.

This looks very likely as Sarah is shown as born Aston Staffordshire so this would fit .. going to leave it now and come back later.

Thanks again.

Have now found this re Muxton:

"Mucklestone, or Muccleston, is a small village on the side of a declivity, with a southern aspect, nine miles NW by W of Eccleshall, and four and a half miles NE of Market Drayton. Its parish is about six miles in length, and from one to two miles in breadth, extending along the borders of the counties of Salop and Stafford. Five of its townships, ***Aston***, Knighton, Mucklestone, Oakley and Winnington being in Staffordshire and the other four, Bearston, Dorrington, Gravenhunger and Woore, in Shropshire."

Riddle of Aston, Staffordshire solved and rellies found.

Thanks Jim
