just wanted to say a BIG thank you for all the reply's,has really spurred me on to start filling in the gaps in my tree and look farther into my family history,

Without certificates all info is guess work. You need to find the birth ref of the child who is your direct ancestor, buy that for £7 and then you have mums full maiden name so you can confidently move backwards looking for the marriage. Buy the marriage cert for £7 and then you have both mum and dads fathers names and occupations, their place of residence at the time of their marriage, occupations and witnesses names. You then can find them in census info prior to their marriage and keep working back through certs and census until you reach 1837 pre certs and you then need parish records.

would be grateful for any more info on......
John H reynolds born c1854 ,lived in Welwyn,Herts a railway platelayer by trade,married to phoebe (surname unknown) born c1856.
would be grateful for a 1901 census look up or help on marriage details or tips to search.
