Does this sound like a possible inquest?

Good though, Colette. Think it will go on my list next time I order some certificates.

Just to update (had forgotten I'd posted this) - I still have to get George's death certificate but I've got Hannah's now - turns out she died of TB when her youngest baby was 3 months old (and then the baby died six months later - registered in West Derby, which is Liverpool).

Interestingly, although FreeBMD says George was registered in Liverpool reg. district, the Lancs BMD says it was the subdistrict of Lathom which I thought fell under Ormskirk - so I wonder if it just got sent to the wrong register office?

That is a good thought, Gwyn. I was thinking, unlike now, they wouldn't have the means to store a body then like they would now in a mortuary. I suppose they would have to bury him sooner rather than later.

Have a feeling I might order the certificates - I think they could be interesting.

Perhaps there was an inquest and the death was registered when the full verdict was known, although the burial had already taken place.

That's a thought - I'll have to check that there isn't another matching George.

I dont think registration was compulsory before 1874

Have made a giant breakthrough in my tree today - been to the records office and located the burial of 3xgreat grandma Hannah Halsall and her father George Holcroft, but . . .

I brought my stuff home, determined to find Hannah's death reference (her name was put down as "Helsall") now I know her husband didn't commit bigamy the following year but her dad George is puzzling me.

He is buried at Aughton, near Ormskirk (as is Hannah), and the date I've got for him being interred is 19 Jun 1872 but his death seems to have been registered in the Dec qtr of the same year in Liverpool. Aughton comes under Ormskirk so I am curious as to why there was a delay.

Has anyone any ideas one way or the other?
