Betty, I get this now and then and it usually means that the server is having a problem. I leave it and go back later and it works :) The first time it happened I spent half the day on the phone to the techis changing settings and what have you, only to find it righted itself once the server was up and running again. Just leave it for a while and check it out later.

Betty, it is definitely a problem with Orange's server. It used to happen all the time in my final year with Orange to the extent that it made my email unusable. Solution? Switch isps to a more reliable company.

Hello Barry, Heather and Tracey,

Yes I also get it all the time, I am on Outlook Express and have a wireless router from Orange. I am now on a laptop too and found since I am now also on Vista this happens a lot more now. Barry I do have a firewall and a AVG anti virus as well, maybe any of these that is the cause of the problem too. Also as you say I can still post on GR its just the e-mail that goes off.
I switched off and on again last night/early morning and it came back on again, its just a pain when you are in the middle of sending an e-mail or something and it goes off like that.

I had this problem 2 days ago - just switched my pc off. Returned next day - all is well, so don't rush to alter anythink. Most times the problem seems to fix itself.

Hi Kay,

Orange are forever having problems, there is even a message board setup by someone on the internet where people discuss their proplems with Orange broadband.

Betty it wont have anything to do with your AVG or firewall as its only intermittant - it will be the server having probs. I had three weeks of it on and off once, drove me spare especially after paying for them to tell me to turn off all my programs and such and then enter all the info again - grrrrr! Finally I spoke to them again and asked for a supervisor who immediately said, Yes, Im sorry we have one of the servers down and its affecting a lot of people.

I could have screamed.

Barry, the e-mail server is a totally different server to the internet, used solely for e-mail, thats why you can access the net, but not e-mail.

Another worrying thing about Orange's email servers is that sometimes they are hijacked by spammers and then get blacklisted by other ISPs. Over Xmas NONE of my orange sent emails were accepted by any of my friends' hotmail addresses, and some sent to AOL addresses disappeared too. Some came back with a message saying that the server had been blocked by Spambot.

Since changing to Sky (I still have the same old windows XP computer), I've had no problems with lost and bounced emails and don't get any of those error messages any more either.
