I have been looking for a family in the 1871 census, and because they have such a common name surname and even their Christian names are so very common, I have not been lucky so far.

He is JOHN ROBERTS born abt. 1845, (he is recorded as being of full age on his marriage cert of 1868) his wife is MARY , born in 1851. Mary was born in Kirkby, lancashire.

They would have had one daughter in the 1871 census called, MARY ELLEN

Living in the Bootle/Liverpool area.

JOHN is recorded as a Carter on the marriage cert. of 1868.

Any thoughts/suggestions/help will be very much appreciated.

Just one point - the fact that John is stated as being "of full age" on the marriage cert would mean any age over 21yrs - so he could well have been a much older man than his wife.

Have you found them on later census records to confirm his age?

Hi Athena,

I found Mary in the 1881 census with John, my grandfather, and his brother William.

I think I have also found Mary Ellen as a servant in Kirkby.

No sign of John though, so he may have been away on the night of the census. He died in 1884, and I do have this cert which states him to be 40 years of age.

Living as a lodger/boarder is George Massie, and in 1894 George and Mary married.

Mary was born in 1851, I do have this cert.

My granddad, John Roberts, jnr. was not born until 1874 and Mary Ellen was born in 1869.

Kathlyn,

Have you looked at my entry for the 1871 census which shows John, Mary and Mary Ellen Carter?

Please let me know if I have found the right family.

Did Mary (John's wife) have a middle name?

Kathlyn Report 15 Jul 2008 18:42

Hi Rachel,

The area is right, the age is right, but Mary Ellens` grandparents were called Mawdsley on her mothers side.

Mary Snr. was just Mary, no middle name.
