Hi i am looking for a reason why a birth might have 3 registrations. i cant give too much information as although the person involved has died he still might have living relatives.
so here goes names and adtes obviously have been changed so sorry if a bit confusing

lady who we shall call mabel RED marries john YELLOW
and john YELLOW dies 1915

mabel now is mabel YELLOW and marries fred WHITE in dec qtr 1919 but using maiden name of RED

son jack born sept qtr 1919 and registered with mothers maiden name RED but child has YELLOW surname

also found hand wrote on the bottom of sept birth 1919

jacks birth with mothers name RED but surname WHITE and same vol number but when it says page it says see dec 30

so on dec 30
there is jacks birth with mothers name RED and surname of WHITE

i can understand his birth being registered in his mothers previous name becuse he was born before mrs red and mr white got married

but why 2 entries in 1919 one for each surname and then one in 1930

any ideas please
thanks linda

The 1919 would be because the father made a signed declaration at the registry office that he claimed parentage,,,and its usaul practice that if this happens the child is entered in both surnames that of the mothers at that time &fathers because the parents wasnt married then ,and not guaranteed to either.
The 1930 could be because a birth certificate was required, and one was issued in which ever surname was used by the person.and because the parents had gone on to marry it was issed in the surname of the father WHITE.........,,

The natural parents of a child who have married each other since the child's birth are legally required to re-register their child. The marriage legitimises the child immediately, therefore making the information in the original birth entry incorrect. The re-registration will ensure an accurate record is kept.

As I have pointed out on these boards many times people are using the term 'registered' when in fact they are talking about entries in the indexes - a totally different thing.
If, when a mother has a baby she has had more than one surname and that information is given to the Registrar, then all of those names will appear in the indexes. If the parents weren't married, then the ftathers surname will also be indexed as a seperate name.
In later registrations this is guided by the software used for the registrations.

Births
Can I change the birth record at a later date?

If the natural parents have married each other since the birth
If the natural parents have married each other since the birth, a re-registration will be required so that a new birth record can be created to show the child as a child of the parents’ marriage. To do this, you will need to complete a form LA1 (Application by the natural parents for the re-registration of their child’s birth following the parents’ marriage) – or form LA1W for births that took place in Wales. Please click as applicable to download, print out and complete.

The 1930 re-index could have perhaps come to about on requiring to produce a birth certificate for a reason<?
The 1919 entries will have been ammened accordingly and any future certificates issued will be issued in the surname of WHITE<<regardless of which 1919 index you quote,,
