There is a bug with the XP print spooler which for some reason MS have failed to fix. Occasionally it will hang up for no apparent reason - the first you usually know about it is when you try and print an nothing comes out.

Re-booting the machine often fails to fix it, and the only way is to stop and restart the service, as described by Keith.

Glad to hear it Elizabeth, sometimes just resetting your computer clears a lot of problems, maybe that is what it took.

Try this, I dont know what windows version you have though.

To start and stop the print spooler

1.Open Computer Management.

2.In the console tree, click Services.

Where? Computer Management/Services and Applications/Services

3.In the details pane, double-click Print Spooler.

4.Do one of the following depending on the task you want to do:

Click Stop to stop the service.

Click Start to start the service.

Notes

To open Computer Management, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
• When you stop the Print Spooler service, it might stop other dependent services.
• The print spooler runs under the Local Computer system account by default.
• You can also start and stop the Print Spooler service through a command-prompt command. For more information, see Related Topics.

My computer has ceased going into "standby" automatically and when I try maually (by clicking on standby!) I get the message:-

"The service "Print Spooler" is preventing the machine from entering standby.
Try stopping this service and try again"

Cannot work out how to do this, can anyone help?
