Probably a stupid question but is there any way to do a search for siblings if you have the one childs name and want to know if there are others or a way of checking if a couple had any children or is it just a matter of going through all records.

If it's after 1912, there are some transcribed births on Ancestry with the mother's maiden name up to c. 1920 now but it's not necessarily complete. (Saying that, I've found twins in my tree born in 1854 and they still haven't made it onto the FreeBMD index . . .)

Otherwise it is a case of trawling through, quarter by quarter. Usually you can narrow it down a bit, though - the largest gap I ever found between siblings was 23 years but the mother was 19 when she married - especially if you know roughly how old the parents were.

Thank you, thought it would just be a case of trawling through.

Sandra,

If it's before 1901 you can use the censuses of course. You could also have a go at the parish registers.

If you find the baptism for one child on the IGI extracts, you may sometimes find siblings by clicking on the batch number and using the same parent details.
