No - he just disappears after the birth of his 4th child in 1795. (in Suffolk)

Do you have a death cert that says how long he'd been in the colony?

No sign of him on these two Ancestry lists:

New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia, Settler and Convict Lists, 1787-1834

New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922

This is the earliest index on the NSW government site:

Index to miscellaneous immigrants, 1828-43

but he's not there either.

OK, that's the only James Strange on any of the convict records, so it doesn't sound as though your James was a convict.

I'll see if I can see him on the other passenger lists.

Family History Online has one hit for him, listed under:

James STRANGE found in Convict Arrivals in New South Wales 1788 - 1842 1 entry in New South Wales during 1813

I'm out of credit on that site; it'll cost you 6p if you want the details, but it probably won't give you any extra information.

Fascinating stuff Mary,
but that fellow is a bit too young
I estimate my James was born abt 1760
and was from Coddenham/Gosbeck/Framsden in Suffolk.

Found him now in the 1825 convict muster.

Age 20; employed by Captain Piper, Bringelly.

The Ancestry transcription gives his estimated year of birth as 1793, so presumably the age given is the age on arrival, although it doesn't say so on the image.

The Ancestry convict lists show that he was convicted at the Old Bailey in September 1812 and sentenced to transportation for life.

This may be the trial:

The date's a bit early, but it would have taken time to get the death sentence commuted to transportation for life.

Thanks for that Mary.

The dates fit him dropping out of sight in England.
Still cant prove he is my man yet.

If this is the right person, he was transported on the Fortune in 1813 and was given a conditional pardon in 1819:

The SAG site has tickets of leave, but he isn't listed there:

Although I am Australian, all my family are English-
or so I thought!- so I have little experience with
Australian records.

I have found someone on the 1828 Census of NSW
who may be my ggggrandfather James Strange.
Transported for life.

Can anyone recommend the best sites for convict records? - especially where they were transported from and where they were convicted?

Thanks
