I'm wondering if an experienced genealogy buff can help me sort this one out...in 1881 census Thomas Hill, born in 1812 in Bradwell, Derbyshire, (ret'd wire rod printer) is living in Horner Houses,Bradfield, Yorks. Almost next door is Stephen Hill, born in Bradwell, Derbyshire. Thomas COULD be Stephen's uncle, but there's another candidate, Thomas Hill who was born in 1813 in Bradwell, Derbyshire. He is also widowed, but still living in Bradwell.
What would your next move be to sort them out?

Trace both Thomas's back on the census and see which one fits? They must have differences somewhere down the line that can help you work it out.

If you use the advanced search on Ancestry for Thomas Hill b 1813 +/- 5 yrs, keyword Bradwell, it immediately reduces the census offerings to just 2 individuals for 1851, 61, 71 and 81. Both are married with children over 10 in 1851, so they should be findable in 1841? (This is just in the hope that the further back you go, the more likely that you are to find a connection - on the other hand, if either family takes in an aged relative, a connection might be made on a later census).

Bradwell is in the parish of Hope (Genuki, Bradwell)

The IGI has baptisms for 1812 and 1813 in Hope.

The 1812 baptism has father Benjamin - and could well be the one whose first child with wife Jane is named Benjamin?

Hi Jim,
Yes, Stephen in my tree has parents Abraham William Hill and Martha Evans.
Abraham's brother is Thomas (1812) and their parents are Benjamin Hill (c1776) and Hannah Middleton (1779) who got married in Hope, Derbyshire in 1802.
I don't know who Samuel and George are, but I'm in the early stages of this research. If you have any further information about them, it could be really useful, thanks.
I wonder if Thomas and Abraham had a brother? I'll get digging!
Cheers, Roisin.
