Hi All,

My grandparents in-law (John James McKenna & Evelyn McKenna marr in 1930s Glasgow) had to have permission from the Pope to marry. They were not first cousins as I can make out so why would they need permission?

Thanks for any comments,

Gillian

If they were Catholic and one of them had been divorced could it have been permission to marry in a church?

Hi Jill,

Thanks for your reply. According to the family it was because they were related but maybe that was just a story to hide another reason!!! They were Catholic.

They do both have the same surname and both families originated from Co Monaghan Ireland.

My brother, an Anglican, had to get permission to marry his Catholic wife in South Africa. He had also been divorced.

Hi Julia,

I'll have to ask my in-laws if there was a divorce!

My great grandparents also had to get permission from the pope to marry, they were 2nd cousins. I found this information from the original entry in Liverpool but it was not on the marriage certificate that I purchased from the GRO.

Hi Maisy,

Second cousins could be a possibility. As they have the same surname and their families came from the same area it is quite likely that they are distantly related. I thought it was only first cousins who needed permission. There is probably no shady divorce secret after all!!

Thanks,

Gillian

Both me and OH had to have our 1st marriages annulled by the pope, we had both been baptised Catholic but had married 1st husband/wife in registry office and C of E church to allow us to marry in Catholic Church even though the church did not "recognise" these marriages we still had to have this done, next year will be our 25th anniversary, would get less for murdering him
