Frances Jane or Frances Ellen?

Hi Pam,

why are you so sure it is you who are wrong? Who was the informant on the death cert? could it be that the informant made a mistake when registering the death? I have had that happen in my family and it was actually the deceased persons daughter who was the informant. If the death cert is the only piece of evidence to support the Jane theory I would tread very cautiously before disregarding your own research.

Ancestors? who'd have them eh? lol.

Thanks everyone for your help,

Hope I can spend some time later trying again to find Frances Jane in BMD's, IGI and census, Frances had a daughter in the quarter before she married I have just written a letter to the registry office asking for a copy of this birth certificate, I have done this to try and get an address that may match with one of the other family members or where she was living when she married anything that will give a little clue to where she came from and her true name, I am also going to try and trace the extended family to see if they have any info

Just thought, sometimes I have seen children called Ellen misinterpreted as "Helen". Sometimes the birth certificate has been registered as Ellen where the baptism or census has the same child down as "Helen".

Pam....Have you seen all your Hansford family on the IGI baptisms and parents marriage?.......still no Jane as middle name though.

Her death was registered in 3/4 1950 and her age shows as 75 making her birth year 1875, I think its back to the drawing board but may be better to start on it tomorrow with a clear head as I am feeling pretty angry with myself for going all the wrong way and not looking more for a Frances Jane!!!!!

Thanks
Pam

Hi Nicky, yes thats right it does have H and not E, also this Frances Hansfords sister is down just as Kate but was registered as Kate Eliza Marsh Hansford Marsh being mothers maiden name should have said that Frances was registered as Frances Ellen Marsh Hansford.

Again thanks for your help

Thanks Reggie, will look at census to see if I can find any other Francis that I've not got, she married Henry John Marshall, witness were Frederick Chales Marshall ( his brother) and Bessie Lock ( dont know her) and it says on the 1901 she was born in Glamorgan and her son in Bridport Dorset but have his birth cert and it has been put wrong way around.

Nicky, the info they have is from the death certificate.
as she was registered as Frances Jane.

Thanks for taking the time to reply

So this is presumably the marriage...

Marriages Jun 1899 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barry David Cardiff 11a 559
Hansford Frances Cardiff 11a 559
Marshall Henry John Cardiff 11a 559
Rowland Edith Cardiff 11a 559

On the 1881, this Frances with father George a Coal Trimmer has middle initial H.

Have you asked your contact what evidence they have that she had Jane as a middle name?

Wonder if anyone could possibly help sort this one out,

Frances Hansford born Dorset married in Cardiff April 1899, she used no other names, on the certificate she states her age as 24.
with her father as John Hansford coal trimmer deceased,
when her death was registered she was named as Frances Jane, the other party doing the same family is very sure that she did have Jane as a second name, before we made contact I had only the marriage certificate to go on so I worked from that and looked up all the Frances Hansford births between 1870 and 1880 and then eliminated each one by death or marriage and came up with the following
Frances Louisa b ΒΌ 1871 Bridport
Married Bridport 2/4 1895 to Arthur Crabbe, Albert Hyde or William Gerrard
Frances b 4/4 1871 Dorchester
Frances Sarah b 2/4 Dorchester
Married Dorchester 2/4 1897 to Charles Wheeler or Thomas Gallop
Frances Ellen M b 3/41877 Bridport
Frances Ada b4/4 1878 Bridport
Married 2/4 1902 Lancaster
I did then find a marriage for a Frances Hansford in 4/4 1893 in Dorchester which I would take as being the Frances b 4/4 1871 and she married Matthew Slade
The only one I had left was Frances Ellen Marsh Hansford, I sent for that certificate, but it said father George Hansford, Farm Labourer I had then traced her to Cardiff for the 1881 census and find her with her parents and sister Kate Hansford, living next door is John Marsh her uncle and his family, both him and George Hansford are said to be coal trimmers, in 1882 George Hansford died, I have picked up what I think is the family in 1891 and the mother has remarried and she used the step father surname
( James Radley) by 1901 her mother has died and sister Kate has married so have sent for her marriage certificate to see what details that brings.

I have looked on several sites using different spellings for Frances/Francis and Hansford and not come across a Frances Jane, but have been told I have got it wrong by two people, so can any kind person out there please help me find my Frances Jane Hansford to save me going on any more wild goose chases.

Many thanks

Pam
