Hello received a birth certificate this morning for my Great Uncle - Cyril C.Davison- Birth reg in 1924 Q3- Vol 2a page 1853.

I ordered the birth cert for him which arrived this morning, on the application sheet that comes with all certs, underneath the reference details it has been written in pencil RE-REG -- (for vol number), page 1848.

On the certificate it says he was registered as Claude, no middle name or anything, father's not named (as with 2 of his other siblings) .

I am a bit confused as to what this could mean, obviously he was re-registered at some point but is he now called Cyril C. Davison or Claude???

Any help would be appreciated

Did he keep his surname on the re registration?

I have no idea if he is still alive Kirsty, I so wish I did !
I was hoping to find out to see if there is any way of making contact ! I cannot seem to find a death which matches his birth date which is 7th May 1924.

Rose,
As for the surname , it states on the birth cert I received Claude Davison, which is the same but if you get what I mean, is the cert I received his registration or his RE-registration???

I would guess that because the office put on the application form in pencil - re-reg page 1848 that they have sent me the re-reg??

Not sure !!

Help gratefully received

Was there a date listed for the re-registration?

Gro informed me that if a birth has been re registered the original birth certificate is superseded and they will only issue the re-registered certificate.

Hope this helps.

Rose, there was no date listed for the re-reg.

Many thanks for your info Gerry, that kind of confirms then that he is now Claude & not Cyril?

Thanks Barry for your info too, still confuses me as to what he is now !

If Gerry has been told then by the GRO that they use the re-reg then could well be the case.

When my father, who is son of Claude/Cyril's sister,
was born it was registered that his mother's maiden name was DaviDson, which completely threw me at first cos I tried to trace back DaviDson's and about two months into it found out it was Davison !

It states on this birth cert that mother is Ellen DaviDson formerly Hoare.
Kind of makes my brain tick a little more if it was the re-reg cos if thats the case then they got it right the first time & not the second !

My head is a bit frazzled !

Hi Donna

Sorry to hear the Davison's are causing you even more problems.

I was talking to a friend recently who had to register her son 18 years after his birth becuase he needed a passport and she was unmarried at the time of his birth, athough later married his father.

I wonder if Claude/Cyril was doing something similar at the time they applied i.e. emigrating or getting married and if any if the Salford births will help. Very strange

Good Luck Kay

Thanks for your reply Kay,

Maybe that could be a reason.

Is there any way of finding out when he was re-registered?? I wonder.....

Fingers crossed!

My daughter was re registered this year as me & her father had a big falling out when I was expecting her.
14 years later she wanted her fathers name on her birth cert so we went to the reg office to do it.
They told us that this new registration is the only cert that will now be copied in future. Her original birth cert is now void. They told us her new registration would appear in the index for the date the re reg was done ie 08/02/08 so you should be able to find out when the re reg happened

Donna,

The way I read it he was Claude at birth but re-registered as Cyril a little later because the page numbers increased.

He was re-registered within a few days or weeks going by the fact the page numbers are 5 different. For that whole quarter 50 pages were used so that gives you some idea.

Thanks for all your input guys:

Well it kind of makes sense to me this:
(this is not necessarily the way it has happened!)

He was registered as Claude Davidson (note the extra 'D')

and then was re-registered properly after as Cyril C.Davison (with the right surname!)
It makes it awkward cos both the original & the re-reg (Cyril C. Davison & Claude Davidson) are registered in same quarter (June) and year (1924) !

BUT : if the case is like Chrisa said and the GRO has sent me the re-reg cos the original is void then he has lived his life as a Davidson ??

Just seems strange that the right surname was changed to the wrong one ??

oh dear.........

Maybe i should drop GRO an email & see if I get a reply .

Sorry Barry, you did suggest that, which I overlooked.

Apologies for that, I will give the Dover office a ring later and report back as to how I get on !!

Thanks for your help!
