Hello Jan

Seems the first number is Samuel's Wartime Identity Number. Found the following on a BBC site:

Identity Cards & Gas Masks
I remember when we were issued with Identity Cards, a man called at our door and gave us the brown cards with our numbers, mine was HAAQ 120 3. I think the letters referred to the town and district, ours was this officer’s 120th house and 3 was me. Dad was number 1, Mam was 2 and my younger sister was 4. In books about the war Identity cards are usually shown as light blue, these were a later issue. I had one when I was demobbed from the RAF. I can’t remember being issued with a gas mask but we all had to carry them at all times. After a couple of years people generally didn’t carry them. In TV films about the war they usually try to get details right but often when it may be about 1944 people are shown with a gas mask still in its cardboard box on a string, this looks silly as right from the start as people bought or made covers for the gas mask boxes to protect them from rain and general wear and tear. The covers were often made of canvas or leatherette. Another kind of container was a metal canister rather like a large thermos flask. I once went to a place where there was a hut filled with tear gas and walked through this wearing the mask to test it.

The letters QB must have been assigned to Birmingham.

Thanks both for replying.

David, the chappie at Birmingham did think it may have been something to do with some war number, but after he said that he did say "he did not have any idea really".

Thanks again both

Hi Jan

Might have it completely wrong but the QBAT/45/1 could be Samuel's wartime Identity Number and would indicate he was head of the household. Think this only because mine was QBEU/272/3, while my father's was QBEU/272/1.

Sorry, but haven't a clue about the second one.

I would expect it to be two people (father and son in this case) who are entitled to vote.
Dont know what the code is though.

Hi

Dont know if anyone can help me.

Went to Birmingham yesterday for various look ups of Electoral Registers.

November 1950 for a Samuel Robinson seemed to have to entries at the same property, both with different Voters numbers.

1st entry Samuel Robinson then after his name QBAT/45/1

2nd entry Samuel Robinson then after his name QAA/2033726

Asked at Birmingham did they know what the reference numbers mean and did they think it was the same person or in fact 2 Samuel Robinsons. Unfortunately no one seemed to know what the numbers meant. I know Samuel Robinson did have a son also called Samuel but wonder if anyone else has every had this.

It seemed to happen quite a few times, sometimes it was the same christian and surnames and sometimes just one person and not just men.

Can anyone shed any alight on this.

Thanks very much

Jan
