When I have been to the Essex RO to look for baptisms I have found on occasions, a note alongside the entry...."Private baptism".

I thought it may have been the "Gentry" who had private baptisms, but in the case I saw recently, the father was a labourer.

Why does this wording signify??

They often did private baptisms on children if they were not expected to live. It may have been done at home or at very short notice.
