I meant surnames. The first name thing is very annoying too though - often they use 2nd names, but sometimes just seem to use a name they fancy!! |

How common was it for families to adopt another name do you think? We have ancestors who seem to have used their "proper" name for official things such as births and marriages, but actually lived for years under a different name - at least as far as the census reports were concerned!! I wonder why. |
