I just wonder how distant this distant grandmother is (a grandmother or possibly a great or 2xgreat grandmother for instance).

Between 1850 and 1854 there are 145 matches for a Jane Campbell birth on Scotlands People these are displayed over 6 pages. So if you don't know the area where she was born there isn't much chance of you finding her.

Scottish registration started in 1855, the online bmd is at Scotlandspeople, for pre 1907 births you can download the extract of the register (basically a certificate) from the site.

The site is pay per view but without a date/place it is a needle in a haystack search, if she were born pre 1855 then the site also has parish records but again you really need a place and date to start with.

If she is a post 1855 birth and you find the details the Scottish system gives far more info than the English/Welsh certs and for far less money too. It's just finding her in the first place.

Hi - Yes born in Scotland drives me crazy. It's a big place. Added to that I am trying to find (for years) a distant grandmother with the name of Jane Campbell (never married) but my Great Grandfather was born in Jarrow. I have his date of death but I can't find Jane. I know he was born in 1853 (along with other James Campbells) but I'm lost. Is there a Scotland Civil Register or something. James is a Glass (guess that's Glassary) Campbell but I don't know where to look next. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

All the very best and good luck with your searches.
