Thank you Glen and Jill. I will just send for the last cert. I will have another check on the censuses just to make sure there aren't two Williams and Janes - worth a try.

Have you looked at 1851 and 1861 censuses to see if there are two William Col(l)yers around at the time. Particularly if they both married a Jane. I know that's a real longshot but worth eliminating the possibility.

It could be that the earlier ref was submitted twice by the registrar and therefore appears in the index twice.

Another possible is that members of the Methodist church who married someone from outside would on occassions have a second service.

In theory the later of the two references should be the one issued.

I am researching my OH gt grandparents and I have found 2 entries for their marriage. How could this happen and would the certs be both the same but some how different dates and how would I know which is the correct entry?

William Colyer (should be Collyer) married Jane Carter
Dec quarter 1855 Staines 3a 1
William Colyer married Jane Carter March quarter 1856 Staines 3a 2

Any thoughts and help would be appreciated

Jill
