Have found in a census relative's occupation as that of 1st class marine engineer - is this what we would call Chief Engineer?

Having had a quick Google, it would seem (in today's world at least) that you would need to be certified as a First Class Marine Engineer before applying for positions of Chief Engineer.

Thanks Penny - mind you - that side of the family - some of them should have been certified!
