UNDERTAKERS RECORDS

Hi Amanda

This interests me cos my husband knows that his grandparents were buried in a particular churchyard, and the church confirms that they were, but when they did their update of grave records about 10 years ago for some reason they have not noted which grave his grandparents are in. There is no headstone and we would like to erect one, but we don't know where to erect it. They actually suggested we contact the funeral directors (they must surely have a record of where they put the coffins!), but unfortunately they have gone out of business and we cannot find out who took them over.

I have written and emailed the minister who conducted the funeral (the churchyard was C of E but the funeral was a Methodist one - the churchyard can even tell me me the name of the minister!), but they have never replied.

So frustrating as the churchyard is close to us and we would like to visit and put some flowers there from time to time. My husband remembers his grandad with great fondness, but his grandma died on his second birthday.

Let us know if you are successful in finding anything out.

Margaret

Hi Shelley

It does have the undertakers name Joseph Slater, St. Ives Road, Leadgate, Consett, Co. Durham.

The cemetary is St. Ives, Leadgate. Apparently in WW2 they used all of the chains around the grave to make bullets, I have also contacted my council and the vicar both claim there are no records. I have trawled the headstones for 2 years now and def nothing there.

Trouble is that they don't all have headstones. The cemetry/churchyard may be completely full of graves (or nearly full depending on the age of the place) but only some will have headstones so it will be very much pot luck. Sorry if that's a bit of a dampener.

If you think you know where they were buried it might be worth trying to find the burial records - even if they were buried in a cemetry there may have been a church service so they may be recorded in their records. Worth checking the Latter Day Saints' records to see if they have the film?

Looks like a good Sunday afternoon walk around said cemetry then?

Have fun! I hope you find him/her.

That seems a bit odd. I know my local church here has records in their vestry. Plans of the churchyard with details of who is in what plot.

I have already done that and they dont have any records?

You could contact the church/cemetry. They should have the details.

I want to locate a grave. Unfortunately there are no paper records due to a fire. I have a copy of the receipt for the funeral and I was hoping it would give a plot number.

What is it you actually want to find out?

Hi

I need a bit of help. Can someone tell me where I would find undertakers/funeral directors records from the 1920's?

Thanks
Amanda
