Why would a man be listed with 2 different surnames on a marriage reference? EG gives christian name then says 'Smith or Jones' for the surname.

I can understand this with women but not sure why with a man.

Just curious.

Presumably his parents were Smith & Jones, and they weren't married.

Or he could be using both names.

Perhaps he had a step-father and was known by his surname, but also wanted his "proper" surname registered as well.

On my grt grandads marriage certificate fathers name said Samual Proctor, between the first name and surname it said alias Alcock, turns out he was illigitimate. Mothers name was Alcock but she married William Proctor when he was a baby, yet he is Proctor an all census records and his children were all Proctor yet he married twice as Alcock, but never used the name any other time.

Like Gill, I have a couple of ancestors who did this.
One was Baggott/Reid, his mother was Baggott, his father Reid, he married under the name Baggott, and it stuck!
The other one was Beecroft/Buckingham. He actually married under the name Buckingham alias Beecroft. Buckingham was his father's name, Beecroft his mothers. His descendents used the name Buckingham.

Melanie

Have you cross referenced the brides surname in the marriage index?
