Thanks for all your help.

The reason I'm so interested in this man is that John Hutton Wright died in 1876, and my gt grandfather was born in 1881. My gt grandfather was the first (as far as I am aware) to have the middle name Wilson. It made me wonder if John Wilson was the biological father....

Honestly, the weird stories you uncover in family trees. And dont you wish they'd been more inventive with names????

Edited to add: JH Wright is referred to as my gt grandfather's father on marriage and death certs, but it clearly is not possible

Very commonly used in Scotland connections someones surname given to a child, either by relationship or just by being a godparent/sponser.or close family friend,,,,

Perhaps you can find John Wilson on a census,,,and work out if he fits in,?

I'm trying to find a little more information on a witness to my gg grandparents wedding.

Basically there has been a bit of a query as to the origin of a middle name in our family, and I've found it as the surname of a witness to their wedding in 1875.

The marriage was between Susan Isabella McLeod & John Hutton Wright in the Parish of Crichton, Edinburgh. One of the witnesses is John Wilson (this is the name used as a middle name in our family).

Is there any way I can find out more about him? Any help would be appreciated.
