I'm having trouble with double barelled names and census searches - any tips as to how to get this right?

From my experience there werent very many double barrelled names before 1900 - but a lot of 2nd given names were surnames, if ya get my drift. Only way to search is do it three times - with double-barrell name, then each of the 2 names.

If you are sure of the first given name and date/place of birth, sometimes a search for that turns up trumps.

Have tried all permutations but don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Under BMDs for this person it's a double barrell so don't really know where to go from here

Perhaps if you gave us the details

I'm just trying to find some further info about my great-grandfather Hubert Stacey Marten-Smith born Wandsworth April 1896. Have found Birth record - under smith - and marriage record under marten-smith but can't find him on 1901 Census.

Also my great-great grandfather on the other side I can find on 1851 and 1871 census but not 1891 or 1901 and I know he was alive still then. He is Henry Coleman born 1845/6 in Shotteswell, Warks - was in Police in Aston Birmingham in 1871.

Any help/suggestions gratefully received

Thanks

Does Hubert have any siblings? As we have the second name added Im thinking a marriage for his mum some time after his birth.

Ok, got him - looks like Marten is possibly just a third name (likely grandparent?)

Births Jun 1896 (>99%)
Smith Hubert Stacey M Wandsworth 1d 789

Hubert's parents:
William Marten-Smith b. 1851
Louise Culverwell b. c1857
Siblings there are 7 children,
Ernest Harry b c1890
Ella Louise b1892
Eric Walter b1894
Hubert Stacey b1896
Cecil Eugene b1897/8

Kenneth Frank b1901.

The Marten-Smith name goes back to the 1790s.

Can anyone find an address for them in 1901?
Thanks

With the Colemans - any suggestions as to why I can't find them on the census search on here? Glitter Baby - you seem to have got them, but when I look I can't find them.........

Looks like I need to get some credits for the PRO site!

Thanks for all your help

You arent buying credits on here!! Get a sub with ancestry - its much cheaper and you have 24/7 usage, no credits stuff.
When you ask for look ups, it really would be useful if you gave everything, every detail you have in the first box please.

Do you know when his father died?

What I mean is that I've subscribed here and not to ancestry - I would have thought that they retrieve the same information from the census searches so why do some show up on ancestry and not on here? Do I really need 2 subs?

Heather

Heather Report 30 Jul 2008 21:33

Emma, did you see the 1901 I found above?

And no, you dont need 2 subs but ancestry is the much better value.

Emma

Emma Report 30 Jul 2008 21:52

Yes did see it - was he listed under Marlen Smith - or is that a typo?

Definitely him though,

thanks
