Could anyone please decipher this for me.
The list has my grandads name with PTE next to it and underneath (L/cpl).
He has three entries against his name, one with Notts regiment and PTE R next to it, then same regiment again with R next to it and then the Durham regiment with LI next to it.
Also under remarks it says Disembodied.
He survived the war so that dosen't mean the gruesome way it could mean.
Thanks

Elisabeth

Jenny,

PTE would mean Private - as in rank. (L/Cpl would mean he had been promoted to Lance Corporal.)

Not sure about the R.

LI would probably be Light Infantry - believe there was a Durham Light Infantry.

Disembodied doesn't mean anything gruesome.... Just that he left the Army - probably gives a date of discharge.

Thanks Elisabeth. Probably the promotion explains why he changed regiment.

Hi Jenny
The R means reserve a bit like our modern day territorial army.

The Disembodied could also mean the regiment he was in disbanded and would explain why there is two regiments for him.

Disembodied means that his TA Call up was ended. ie a TA Regiment is embodied means it goes onto active service - disembodied = service over. Change of regiment happened quite a lot. When a battalion suffered heavy casualities for example the survivors would be posted to other regiments - nothing to do with promotion. Good luck
