1901 census and the military

I believe that my gt. grandfather was in the army when the 1901 census was taken but cannot find him on any searches I do, can anyone suggest why?

Thanks Glitter Baby I never considered that, does that mean that military serving abroad were not recorded?.
I have a record of him transferring from the South Staffs regiment to the West Yorkshire Regiment in 1900(not sure why)
He married in 1904 in his home town, they then had their family. His 5th child was born in 1913 and then he went to France and was invalided out (his 6th child was born in 1916 and after the town where he lost his arm).
I'll have to do some research about the Boer War!

Do you have access to Ancestry to check if there is a Service or Pension record for him
