Double Birth Certificate

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

1907. Mother works as servant in Edinburgh. Travels through to Glasgow to have (illegitimate) child.

Birth is registered in Glasgow. Two days later, an identical record is transcribed in an Edinburgh registry office, cross referenced to the Glasgow certificate.

Why would that be thought necessary or advisable?

Hi Alistair,

Where did you find both these births registered? I can't see why she would register the birth twice!! Was the information on both certificates exactly the same ie fathers name etc? or was it father unknown? Was everything the same date time and place of birth etc.

Identical, yes. Except the Morningside, Edinburgh cert said (in left-hand margin) District of Birth Dennistoun, and in right-hand column "Transcribed at Edinburgh".

No mention of father.

I think I would be inclined to ring the register office in either Edinburgh or Glasgow and ask them for a reason.

Hi Alistair,

I am just wondering if she registered the birth after going back to Edinburgh, thats why the birth was registered in Edinburgh.

Then the registery office in Edinburgh has arranged for the birth details also to be sent to Glasgow as that is where the birth took place, if you see what I mean.

Usually people register the birth where it took place but maybe she just went back to Edinburgh to register it not thinking that it should be done where the child was born

The first certificate (Glasgow) is dated two days before the Edinburgh one.

Hi Alistair
I have a similar thing with who would have been my (much!!) older half sister, born May 18th 1928.
I sent for both certificates to see which was correct.

The birth was in Distict of St Rollux and it was registered on May 28th.
On May 29th the certificate is for births in District of Plantation.
On the left of certificate it states District of birth St Rollux, and in the right hand column it says 'registered May 28th at Glasgow, transcribed may 29th at Glasgow'.

Definitely same baby, complete with her 5 names!

Hi Lyndi

Yes, that's exactly the same.

I suspect a plot by ScotlandsPeople to do us out of double credits.

The reality is Alistair, that if I wasn't so impatient when it comes to getting my evidence, I would have just sent for one of the certificates.
It would have been the right baby, I would have been happy - and I would never have sent for the second certificate!!!
