Is there a way to find out why a birth wasn't registered for 4 years. How would they have gone about it and would there be an explanation anywhere. The birth was finally registered in 1973. Has anyone had any experience with that?

I don't think you can find out why, late registrations could be due to several reasons but there were some changes to the registration process at about the time the birth occured.

If you have the cert anything noted in column 10 (right of cert) might give some clues but there won't be a reason given.

Any info re late registration via a google just brings up the most recent information about how to apply for a late registration.

Have you checked to see if the birth was 1st reg under the Mothers maiden name?...Maybe the Parents eventually married?
Maybe the Father insisted the child was reg under his name?

Could it be that the child had to produce a birth cert to go to school? A couple of years ago I met a traveller mother who had never registered her child, she delivered it herself and had never had the need of a cert until she decided to settle in one place and send the child to school.
