As I am quite new to all this, can someone tell me the cheapest way to get copies of birth, death and marriage certificates. The one I have found costs £25, seems a bit dear to me!

Hi Susan,
You need to search for the date, quarter, volume and page number (or request help in finding this info) then apply on line to www.gro.gov.uk a cert costs £7 when this info is provided.

Regards,
Bernadette

That's a bit strong Valerie. The GRO isn't the only official source of certificates, in fact the originals are not held by the GRO anyway and they have some missing records.

Local register offices can supply certificates, locating local offices is best done by googling for the local council or by using the contacts list on the county boards on the Familytree Forum website. Local offices charge £7.

It's the certificate supply companies that charge a fortune, in some cases as much as £53 per certificate.

Tried GRO they want £25, cannot see £7 mentioned anywhere. Tried the other way through local register office at Islington wher my great grandmother was born in 1865, but they don't have records that far back. Help, I must be doing something wrong!

You need the GRO ref and you have to tick the box on the GRO site to say the ref is known.

Once you get past that bit you need to enter the district, quarter, volume and page numbers in the relevant boxes.

Have you got the ref number? If not do you know where to look for it?
