I am relatively new to this and now I need to trace other ancestors through parish registers. Is there a site on line or do I need to buy cd roms ?

Have you tried the IGI at www.familysearch.org? There are some on there.

You could also try googling the place nane and 'parish records'.

Some are available on CD but by no means all, you may have to start visiting records offices!

You could try asking on the Records Board.

Some parishes have been transcribed by local FH Societys and some of us hold fiche or CD copies

http://www.familyhistoryonline.co.uk/

Searches are free thereafter pay to view, £5 minimum, but each 'look' generally only costs about 6p.
Available parish records depends on the county so check the coverage section before parting with your money :)

If you are lucky enough to be researching Docklands, East End and Thames Watermen & Lightermen Ancestors there is no better site than...

http://www.parishregister.com/

Only Baptisms are transcribed and the cost is very reasonable.
A tip...Only ever enter the surname when searching!

Good old dockland ancestors, eh Chris? And thank goodness James is back in his shed there.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will work my way through them, but unfortunately I cannot go to the parishes as I don't live in England

Once again thanks a lot

Thanks again to everyone who gave me website addresses. I have made some progress and there are plenty of lines of enquiry to research now.

Best wishes from Chris in Sardinia

Heather

I was following James' health updates online and let out a huge sigh of relief when I saw he was back 'in the shed' :)

Can't imagine Parish Registers Online without him!

No nor me Chris. I just love his newsletters and his amusing little emails that I sometimes get :) Lovely bloke, great shock to hear of his illness - so unexpected at his age.

Christine, if you use IGI on familysearch.org - look at the other services they offer - you can always order for a small fee the fiche for a parish to check out at your nearest Mormon family centre.

Has anyone mentioned freereg and the Online Parish Clerk projects?

Who/where are you looking?
