electoral roll searches question

can you find old electoral rolls online or do you have to vist the town concerned in person?

Most libraries have an email address (if you Google the town name+library) and some will do a check for you.

You need an address though, as they are not in alphabetical name order.

Hi Paul,
It depends which year you are searching for. Libraryies hold recent rolls but if it's an old one you need they won't have it, it will be at the local records office

I have found electoral registers from the 1930's at libraries.

Here is a site to look at to find old electoral roll information. Do bear in mind no electoral roll was taken during war years, You can usually get a one year search carried out for free - but some areas make a charge.

It depends what area you are looking for but I know certain Birmingham electoral rolls are on line at midlands historical data.com but is pay per view.

Cheshire electoral rolls 1842-1900 are online for free at the new FamilySearch beta site: http://search.labs.familysearch.org .
