Hi can anyone help me, new to this, doing quite well so far but have now hit a blank. To search for a marriage, when you haven't a clue what the married surname is, do you have to trawl through all the male names in that time period or can you search through the female maiden name?

You can look for the female's name.

What name and about what year are you looking for?

Hi Kath, thankyou. Just wanted to check before I buy more credits. Lady I'm looking for: Ruth M Green registered born St.Asaph Jan Feb Mar 1937, Mother Freda Green nee Walmsley, father Cyril Green, she was possibly married in Bolton in the fifties. x

There is this marriage, though not sure if it's the one you are looking for:-

Ruth M. Green, spouse Ronald Wood
Sept. qtr. 1958, Middleton, 10e, 1065

Middleton is in Lancashire and covers Chadderton, Crompton, Middleton and Royton.

Janie - DONT buy any credits for dates up to the first decade of the 20th century - all bmd are available free on freebmd AND. Get an ancestry.co.uk sub - or at least a 14 day free trial for all census information and lots more.

Thanks Heather wish I had thought of this before, spent loads! but it's worth it, you get quite hooked. Don't know about records going back as far as the 10th century, I'm having trouble just trying to get my mum to part with her mother's maiden name! Can records for Scotland and Ireland be accessed on this site?

LOL, sorry, I meant 20th century. Freebmd is being transcribed so that it is name searchable by wonderful volunteers and they are working there way through but most of the records end in the first couple of decades of the 20th century at the mo. BUT still very very helpful.

Nope, they dont have Irish or Scottish records Im afraid. Ireland is a real pain - Im very glad I dont have any - Ive abandoned my OHs tree because of his Irish GGPx2.

Scotlands People have the Scottish records, luckily again, I have none there.

If you need help with a particular person, put a query on here. Why wont your mum give you your grans name? When/where was mum born? If you have her birthdate and her maiden name, you can look it up anyway as long as she was born after 1911 mothers maiden names are given in the registration ref.

Get yourself a free 14 day trial with ancestry.co.uk - that gives you virtually all the basic records you need and there are no units, you are free to use it 24/7 - couldnt manage without it. Ive had a sub for 5 years, let it lapse in April and Ive had to sub again as I miss it so much. In fact, even better, buy yourself a Family Treemaker 2006 program for your computer from twr computing - about £11 and you get a months free sub with it I believe. Bargain. Plus the GR tree is useless, the FTM one you can be so much more flexible and add pictures, print out lists, trees, records etc. and back to cd and the internet. Have a look at twr computing online and get the program including the free sub.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 10 Aug 2008 21:29

You can only search for births under the mother's maiden name from mid-1911. It isn't shown in the indexes before that .
