I am searching the 1851/1861 census for a very common name in the Liverpool area and the only information I have to go on is:-

According to the information on a marriage cert, the occupation of the person I am looking for is...farmer.

He is, ROBERT ROBERTS who has a son JOHN. John was born about 1846ish.

I have added 25ish years onto the birth date of John to come up with a possible birth date for Robert of 1820+-

I have been unable to find a Robert Roberts who was a farmer.

Any ideas as to how I can look for a specific occupation would be very much appreciated.

In my experience farmers often had another occupation at the same time.

On the marriage cert - what was Johns place of residence at the time? Any helpful witness names?

Many famers were also licensed victuallers - I assume it was away of doubling up on their profits - providing drink and food aswell.

Have you checked wills for the father?

Many thanks for all your thoughts, I will have to do some lateral thinking to see if I can solve this.

Just wondered if this could be a possiblity, in the 1851 census

Roberts Robert 25 Head Farm Labourer Skelmersdale, Lancashire

Roberts Jane 24 Wife Skelmersdale, Lancashire

Holland James 2 Son Skelmersdale, Lancashire

Roberts John 14 M Son Skelmersdale, Lancashire

I know the birth dates are slightly out, but in my own experience census birth dates are sometimes way out and Robert is a farm labourer.

Just to add further confusion...
I have seen records where men have been shown to be farmers, but the original record says farrier, which looks very similar.

And again, dads who were agricultural labourers who become "farmers" on their kids' marriage certs! When was the marriage?

If she wasnt registered there wont be a birth cert.
Was she baptised? How did she manage to get her pension without proof?
