relationship muddle - please help

Have now searched for a marriage but cant find one of them either.

I also noticed the big age gap between 2 kids 1889 and 1898. I think this may be significant.

Please help

On the birth cert for John aged 3 his mothers name says elizabeth formaly campbell.

Doesnt make sense to me.

If anyone has 5 mins to sort this for me please.

I have a family in the 1901 census husband wife 3 kids I have the youngest childs birth cert and confirms names for me. On the census it gives another child who is step son to head of house. He was born in between the other kids. Whos son is he? He has a different surname to the others and the wifes maiden name. I can find a birth record for him but is a year out and the surname is spelt different to the census. I cant find the family on the census before even using name and county variances.

This family are spinning my head.
