Hi, I wondered if anyone might have any suggestions for the following, On the birth certificate of a family member, a daughter, its gives the name of her father, which she takes, however I can find no record of a marriage for her parents. For reference the mother appears on the1901 census under her maiden name living with her family and the daughter arrives shortly after the census, and I cannot find any reference to the father, a royal marine. Sometime later the mother marries another man. On the marraige certificate she gives her maiden name. Can I assume that the daughter was illigitimate, and that her mother and the royal marine were not married, or is ther somewhere else that I could look. I have looked all through the the lists of marriages around that time. any help would be much appreciated. Penny

The birth certificate **may **give indication if the couple were married,,written,,formally is usual for a married couple ----------- or nee if the child has just taken the mans surname by his agreement, therefore being born out of wedlock,,,,
