Handwritten amendments to BMD Indexes

Some of the BMD Index pages have handwritten amendments at the bottom. Some of these end in something like "see B'29" or "J'44". Can anyone tell me what this means? Apologies if this question has already been asked and answered hundreds of times, but I couldn't find it.

Jonathon, see J44 would mean check the register for June 44, you will see M,J,S or D then a two digit year.

The person will have been registered/reregistered late for some reason and the ref inserted into the correct year of birth.

Thank you very much Keith. It's blindingly obvious once it's pointed out!
