Thanks for the prompt reply Peter.

From the 1861 census onwards my ancesters changed their place of birth to Bermondsey, so no extra help from that perspective.

Angela,

You are right that you must now consult the Bristol parish registers and that there are several parishes in the city. However, you do have some useful information such as his likely year of birth and his father's name. I suggest you follow him and his relatives in all available censuses as there might be a more precise indication of place of birth such as Clifton, Cotham, Redland etc.

Best of luck,

Peter

I have located James Holloway born c1812 in Bristol in the 1851 census living in Bermondsey with his family also living in the same house is a Thomas Holloway born c1819 also from Bristol with his family I am taking a wild guess that they could be brothers.

I have after some time managed to locate James Holloway in Bermondsey, Surrey in the 1841 census. I know from his marriage cert 1837 that his fathers name was William.

How do I go about trying to track more information about them living in Bristol and information on their father William and mother. I know I will need to look at Parish records but I am guessing there are an awful lot for Bristol.

Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Angela
