Hello,

I have been making inroads into my family tree, but seem to be having real problems with my grandad's side of the family.

His Name was James Thomas Chapman, and was born 30/11/1895. I have his birth certificate, and it states that his father was Frederick Chapman, and mother was Ellen Chapman, late Younger, and formerly Edmonds. I know he was born in Peckham and I think it's says he was born in New James Street, sorry document not very clear. My problem is, I cannot find him in the 1901 census. I know my grandad moved from London to Plymouth, where he married my gran in 1922.

Can anyone suggest where I could be going wrong? I would be greatful for any suggestions big or small.

Kind regards,

Sandra

Hi Yorkie,

It looks as though it could be, although his birth certificate gives my grandad's year of birth as 1895, he wasn't registered until the 18/01/1896 in camberwell. I see it say's abt 1897, so it could be him. Do you know if descrepencies, like this often happen? His marriage certificate gives his dad's occupation as a mason's labourer, so that fits in too

It also includes children from her previous marriage, and my grandad called his children James, Daniel, and George.

I don't know how you found it, but thank you very very much.

Best wishes,
Sandra

Thank you again for your help. This does make this a bit more confusing for me. My mum, who was not very good at remembering things said that Dan died in the second World War on the Voltaire, yet when I looked through the records the only Chapman who died on the Voltaire was some one called Leonard edgar Charles, who was born in abt 1919. Now if Ellen was 45 in 1901, the likelyhood of her having a child 18 years later, I would think are non exsistant. Can you think of anywhere else, I might look for World War 2 casualties. Sorry to pick your brains again, I know it's cheeky.

Thank you both very much for taking the trouble to reply.

I looked in the war records only on this site, so you have given me other avenues to follow. Sorry I took so long to get back to you, but I had to take a cat to the vets.

Best wishes,

Sandra

Sandra, do read the tips for newbies and other threads on here which give good sites and links. I do hope you arent buying credits through GR!

Dan would be at 42 quite mature to enter the war arena in WW2 - more likely WW1.

Hope the cats ok :)

Thanks for pointing that out Heather, the thought had never crossed my mind that he would be 42. My mum said it would be WW2, and to doubt her didn't cross my mind. She also said he was on the War memorial in Plymouth, but I can't find Dan on there, or on the Commonwealth War Graves, in either war.

So now i'm not sure what to think. The cat is fine, I on the otherhand have many scratches.

Thanks for your help
