Hi Julie
I had the same problem with one of my relatives "disappearing" off the face of the earth and on digging a lot deeper found out he had been deported to Australia after he had dones his time for the crime committed! Maybe you will find you man on the passenger lists?

His name is Henry Whittington and he was born in 1826 (approx) in Sileby, Leics. He just appears to have vanished around 1855!

Thanks

What name sre you seeking and do you have an approximate date of birth for him ?

He could well be in prison in another county. The problem is that quite often, prisoners were only listed by their initials and not their full names, same for patients of some hospitals, inmates at asylums etc.

I've only checked the census lists for Nottinghamshire though and presumably he could have been sent to another county?

The rest of his family, wife and children, are still around in 1861, living with her brother, so they definitely didn't emigrate.

I did for a while think he may have died and never been registered, can't even find any trace of a burial either!!

Thanks for the help though!

He should still be listed on the census, even if he was in Prison.

Have you checked passenger lists to see if he emigrated?

Around the 1850's
Thanks Sam

Does anyone know if there's a resource for checking whether or not someone was sent to prison at all?

I have a relative who appears to have just disappeared off the face of the earth and I wondered if that could be the case.

Thanks
Julie
