Hi Len

You need to look in the GRO regimental births indexes. These are available on FindMyPast and FamilyRelatives websites. If you find your person listed, you can apply for a cert from the GRO.

Hi Len

If you have found your ancestor and applied for a certificate What you get is a copy of the birth entry which will give you the date, place of birth , parents names, but not mothers maiden name , rank of father and regiment , plus name of army chaplain and the name of the adjutant you certified the entry to be correct
My grandfather and his brother were listed under the 70th foot but the certificates state that their father was in the 108th regiment ( In India )
