Finally, there's Ancestry transcriptions. Suppose I search for Eliz* Duncan, spouse=Alex*. There's a unique hit:

1871 Scotland Census
about Elizabeth Duncan
Name: Elizabeth Duncan
Age: 39
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : Alexander
Gender: Female
Where born: Lonmay, Aberdeenshire
Registration Number: 228
Registration district: Old Deer
Civil Parish: Old Deer
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: Pitfour Paster Lodge
Occupation: Foresters Lab Wife
ED: 4
Household schedule number: 54
Line: 22
Roll: CSSCT1871_42
Household Members: Name Age
Alexander Duncan 41
Alexander Duncan 3
Elizabeth Duncan 39
Louis Duncan 1

Source Citation: Parish: Old Deer; ED: 4; Line: 22; Year: 1871.

If I just search for Duncan with keyword=Pitfour, then I get just 5 hits (with line breaks editted out):

View Record Name Parent or spouse names Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relation Civil Parish County
View Record
Alexander Duncan Elizabeth abt 1830 Old Deer, Banffshire Head Old Deer Aberdeenshire
View Record
Alexander Duncan Alexander, Elizabeth abt 1868 Old Deer, Banffshire Son Old Deer Aberdeenshire
View Record
Ann Duncan abt 1851 Monquhitter, Banffshire Servant Old Deer Aberdeenshire
View Record
Elizabeth Duncan Alexander abt 1832 Lonmay, Aberdeenshire Wife Old Deer Aberdeenshire
View Record
Louis Duncan Alexander, Elizabeth abt 1870 Old Deer, Banffshire Son Old Deer Aberdeenshire

If I'm saving the record, I usually copy and paste the pob and relationship in and reorder the names to match the census. (This ordering can be found from the line number, or from hovering over the name in the first single hit, and looking at the record ID #). Next I hover over the view record link, and read off the occupation (and maybe the line #) and edit this info in. Finally, I fix up the line # in the master record, and delete superfluous info to get:

1871 Scotland Census
Registration Number: 228
Registration district: Old Deer
Civil parish: Old Deer
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: Pitfour Paster Lodge
ED: 4
Household schedule number: 54
Line: 21-24
Roll: CSSCT1871_42

Alexander Duncan 41 Old Deer, Banffshire Head Foresters Labr
Elizabeth Duncan 39 Lonmay, Aberdeenshire Wife Foresters Lab Wife
Alexander Duncan 3 Old Deer, Banffshire Son
Louis Duncan 1 Old Deer, Banffshire Son

Ancestry used to have another line displayed - here it was:
Page: 11 (click to see others on page)
which avoided the keyword lookup. ENG censuses (exc 1871) have an equivalent link.

I always paste into a "notepad" document, which I later save as "4_Rachael-on-GR.txt" or whatever. Notepad is available under start-all programs-accessories in Windows - it's a really dumb word processor. It's too dumb to know about html links or anything like that, so it just grabs the text and throws all the other stuff away, which is precisely what I want if I'm pasting from Ancestry or IGI pages. Notepad isn't my default program for opening .txt files - for moving blocks of text around within the file and other editting after my extraction session is over, use your favourite word processor. You always have the option of right clicking on a file name, and use the "Open With" item to open with Notepad if that's your fancy.

There are a couple of other resources worth knowing about - firstly, freeCEN covers over half of SCT for 1841 (there are coverage tables showing exactly what's covered), and much more for some counties. Here's an example from 1851:

Piece: SCT1851/248 Place: Tyrie -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 6
Civil Parish: Tyrie Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: New Pitsligo
Folio: 183 Page: 7 Schedule: 30
Address: 12 School Street
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SHAND Elizabeth Head U F 34 Laundress & Wheat Bread Dealer Aberdeenshire - Aberdour
ROBERTSON William Son - M 11 Scholar Aberdeenshire - Tyrie
SUTHERLAND Andrew Son - M 2 Aberdeenshire - Tyrie

Secondly, the LDS 1881 transcription (covers ENG + WAL too) is available on CD. In Canada, the price is very reasonable - about the cost of 3 dozen SP credits. The SCT transcriptions occupy 2 disks: Lowland (LKS, RFW, WLN and points south) and Highland. (This split used to be echoed on the 1 credit SP transcriptions in the top right corner.) Any one disk can easily be searched, and there are no restrictions on preceeding a wildcard with 3 letters, but one can't use any relationship pairings (like mother=Jane son=James type searches). It's easy to scroll thru neighbours. Here's another of my gg grannies in 1881:

Tjhanks very much for responses.

Oh I am looking for a lot - nothing in particular as I have got back to about the 1840's on just about every thread on my tree and before i started going into parish records which I know I can get free in Edinburgh Central Library I was going to try and go down some of the sibling lines and see how I got on and Scotland's People would be a pretty expensive option.

Don't get me wrong I have got loads form there, it really has been great and the fact you get the actual images and all the info is invaluable - I just thought there may be more economical rescources - wishful thinking perhaps.

Thanks for the offer Jayne - there is a couple I am struggling with but I imagine if I can't get it on Scotland's People I need to start looknig at name variants because they have not came up on the census searches on Scotland's people at all.

Might try Ancestry for a month - just for census info - I take it you can cancel subscritpion at any time?

Rachael

Ancestry only have the Scottish census records - and only the transcripts, not the images. They don't have BMD's for Scotland at all, for those you will need to use Scotlandspeople.

hello all, just looking for some info on Ancestry.co.uk and whether it is any good if you are dealing with Scottish information?

I have been spending a fortune on Scotland's people - £30 alone this week and obviously Ancestry is more reasonable and when I was stuck someone found the correct info on Ancestry.

is it just Census records for Scotland?

is it only good for fleshing out more info about their lives - as in who they lived with?

just wondered as notice a lot of people use it

Thanks for reading
