What does 'visitation' mean on the registers dated during 1700 and 1800s?.

Also I have family that dies at 2 days, six weeks etc., but one just says 'infant'?

Thanks

VISITATION - A formal visit by one in authority for enforcement of law.

The act of examining into the affairs of a corporation.

The power of visitation is applicable only to ecclesiastical and eleemo-synary corporations. The visitation of civil corporations is by the government itself, through the medium of the courts of justice.

Thanks Jayne,

Does that mean the church's affairs were examined?

The parish church's affairs would be examined periodically by the bishop (or, equivalently, the diocese).
