Hi

For divorces between 1858 and 1927 nearly all the paperwork has survived and its stored at the national archives. Between 1928 - 1937 only 80% of the casework survived and again is stored at the national archives. You can search online at the National archives website in the J77 range, its indexed by name. If you do find what you are looking for at the NA then you can order and pay online and copies of the paperwork will sent in the post to you.

If you are looking for a divorce that occured after 1938 then im afraid the chances are that the paperwork would have been destroyed, but you can obtain a copy of the decree absolute by contacting:

Principal Registry of the Family Division
First Avenue House
42-49 High Holborn
London, WC1V 6NP
Telephone number: +44 (0) 20 7947 6000

However it is expensive..its £40 for a 10 year search. If you want a copy of the nisi you can request this aswell.

Forgot to give you the website

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

click on tab called search the archives, click on catalogue. Click on search the catalogue, in the dept series code box type J77 and put the surname you are looking for in the word or phrase box. Use the date range to narrow down your results.

Good Luck
