Depending on what sort of time period you're looking at ...

Start by finding out what schools are currently in the area. I expect some of those schools would have existed for 100 years or more. Some will be new, some of the original schools in the area will have gone. But at least try and gather a current list. (You may want to talk to the Admissions Department of the Local Authority who should have a list of primary, secondary schools etc)

Then, contact the schools property department at the Local Authority. I don't know how their property department would work but in Kent we have info on all our schools held on a database - which includes the age of the schools as well.

I think if you're just looking in a relatively small area - then there will only be a few schools involved so I'm sure they would be able to help identify which schools may have existed at the time in question. It may be easier for them if you send in a map showing the area you're interested in.

From there - and your shortlist of current schools - ring the schools that may have existed at the time your rellies were there and ask if they have any old records that you could see.

For any "replacement" schools - ones rebuilt on the sites of older schools - the records may have been lodged at the nearest Local Record Office. You're only likely to see the original register - and you may not even see that - but if you do it could give name, dob, parents names and address - plus date of joining the school.

The way in which records are kept (if kept) varies from Local Authority to Local Authority so it could be pot luck but good luck with it.

Yes Eric - but the question on TTF had not been answered had it?

Whilst I agree about the annoyance of a thread appearing on more than one board so long as one of them is left alone for responses that is fine. Putting "duplicate thread" at the bottom of each duplicate thread doesn't achieve the objective does it?

Jill

(I'm not annoyed - I'm just trying to keep this thread "open")

I'm not bothered whether you are 'annoyed'......or not

And there was a reply with advice on the other thread.................

Well sorry for apologising in advance Eric - it was only as I read my message back that I thought it might sound as if I was annoyed with you. Knowing how sensitive people are on these boards I thought I'd make it clear that i wasn't. But, I'll know in future that I can't upset you!

Hi Lynn - at least you know now! Don't worry - it happens from time to time and yes, it's irritating, but only really irritating if people are busy posting lots of info onto each thread. In this case it wasn't a major problem.

Yeah - but it Was Eric that flagged up this one too. Trouble is they are both in danger of being ignored and Lynn might not have received any help!
