These situations moslty point to a --out of wed lock--child,,,depending on the years,,,most pre 1915 were never registered to give a fathers name..or in a stepfathers name...

The first birth registered for mine, the girl took her mothers name as well

The surname of the mother is the same as the son so I presume he took her name.

Apparently this happened quite often when illegitimate children invented a father when marrying - probably to make themselves look more respectable to their inlaws! If you can find a baptism record, it might have the father's name.

I have a birth certificate that doesn't show the father. It was re registered 2 years later with the father's name on it.

The reason for me obtaining the certificate was because the known father had 2 children in the same month and year but with two different women! As the certificate showed no father on the first edition, I'm guessing it was illegitimate.

Check to see if yours had been re registered

I have a relative whose birth cert does not give the fathers name or occupation yet on his marriage cert the father appears, although deceased. Anyone come across this and what were the reasons for this?
