Does anyone know how to research an adoption which happened in 1954 in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have the adoption cert, childs name & birth cert, adoptive & biological parents details. I am hoping their may be some archived case notes somewhere that would give details surrounding the adoption, why/how/reasons etc...Any ideas?

You can only access records if you are the adoptee.

I know someone adopted in Scotland in 1949.
As they were living in southern England, they were able to write to Edinburgh giving permission for the file to be opened in their name, (by someone in authority I believe?)
Nothing could be copied, other than by hand, but there was a father named, although none appeared on the birth certificate.

I should also note, that the adoptive child is now deceased. I am the adoptive childs daughter. So I am not sure what info will be released.

Not sure whether Scottish rules are different, but my friend is not able to access records of her late father adopted in England.

Hi Louise

I don't want to sound negitive but I doubt if you will get anywhere.
However, you will never know unless you try. Having all the details is a positive step.

You should contact www.birthlink.org.uk they will advise.

The same adoption rules apply in England and Scotland,,if the *adoptee* is deceased then no contractual information can be entered into by a third party, the records are now permantly closed,,

Hope that helps.
