i wonder if anyone can steer me in the right direction, i have a picture of my mums birth mum, and she used to clean buses, the picture is of her in front of some buses and we would like to know roughly when the picture was taken, where would i need to look to find out a year from a registration plate.

and in case anyone knows without looking it up somewhere they are PWG 758
MWG 375
BWG 85

Thanking you in advance for any light you could shed on it.

I am fairly sure that 'WG' refers to the place/area of issue. In my old police yearly diary I had a list of every combination of the older reg numbers eg... KKD 371N was issued in Liverpool etc. (before computors took over) But not so sure about the ones you have. It is very possible the first letter relates to a year.
I found the following on Ask dot com

By the mid 1930s, the two letter/four number series of registration marks were exhausted in some areas, and new three letter/three number
series were introduced. AAA 1 was issued (by Hampshire County Council) in 1934 through to AAA 999 and the commencement of the BAA
series in 1936. This process continued until the mid 1950s when marks were reversed to three numbers/three letters.

OKay... its a start.... I am sure it will be somewhere on the internet... if not... Give DVLC a call and ask if they can point you in the right direction

Is WG Sheffield? It was on the pre 1999 registrations.
Go to ASK.com and ask the question, car registration year.

John
I remember the registration districts used to be printed in the AA membership books and yes I think the last letters are probably linked to place of issue.
3 letters ending KO was Kent registered, BK and RV were Portsmouth etc.

* Why is my brain cluttered with remembering this ?*

By googling I found that WG was Stirling until 1974 and then was Sheffied. Found several references to the reversing of the numbers and letters in the 1950s but it looks as if different areas changed at different times.
