FTM Help Needed for BMDs and Censuses

Margaret

If you want to add the info to more than one person then i'm pretty certian you have to add it to each one individually, i haven't come across a way of adding details to several people at once.

I'm assuming you can't as i doubt there is a way to view the notes/add facts windows for more than one individual at once.

You didn't say which version of FTM you are using, but with FTM 16, if you just want to add the citation, you can Copy (using the Copy button at the bottom of the Source Citation panel) it from the first entry you make for it and just do a Paste (using the Paste button at the bottom of the Source Citation panel for the target invidual).

That way you only have to create the full citation once and can then easily add it to all the indiviudal covered by the cenus records.

I don't know if FTM 2008 works the same way or not as the user interface was (over) drastically changed for that version.

Cheers,

Bill

Dear everyone

I must just be the most stupid person on this site. I copied and pasted Glen's link (which now works after I got an error message, must have been a blip) and can see all his advice about adding sources, but I am still no wiser about my original question, which was how to add links to a census record to all members of the family without having to add it ten times.

Have I missed something obvious? Sorry to be so slow on this.

Best wishes

Margaret

PS I will stay on line till about 11 p.m.

Glen has done some brilliant explanations re using FTM over on family tree forum where there is the facility to post images and screen shots. If anyone needs help with their FTM programs - check out the link Glen has given above.

Margaret, this is the link:

http://www.familytreeforum.com/family-tree-software-hints-tips/39399-ftm-baptisms.html

Where Glen has put #12 it means No. 12, # is shorthand for Number. You dont include that in the address when you enter it in your address box.

Thanks Glen for that info, it is a useful way of keeping track of things you have, or havent yet obtained, didnt think of this.

Thanks again

Just to say to everyone, as previously requested that I do, I am going to bed as it is nearly 3 a.m. and becuase of my work schedule over the next two days it will likely be Wednesday evening before I can collect any messages. Could be later. Thank you all for your support.

Sorry Glenn, I must just be stupid. I copied and pasted the link and just got an error message.

I've tried it several times, still the same, it says it did not match any documents.

Libby9 refers to permalink 12, is that something to do with the hash mark? Sorry, I just don't know what I am doing, please help if you can.

I am trying to keep the stiff upper lip but it isn't working.

Don't worry if I am too much of a nuisance, I am sure I can sort it without bothering you so much.

I was most interested in Glen's tips for using FTM effectively, I used Glen's link and found it no problem. Margaret if you move to permalink 12 as Glen mentions it does take you to an explanation of how to best upload census records. I think you've got yourself over upset and aren't reading what's said and absorbing it.

Thanks Glen your tips will be useful to me.

Dear Glen,

That link did not lead me to anything, said it was unavailable. But you have only mentioned baptisms and my request was re cenus records - or was it? Sorry, I am so upset about this weekend's posts that I am not sure. I was wanting to attach census records. Sorry if you have answered me but I cannot find it. Would you mind trying again please?

The link to the screenshot guide is below;

Post #12 on that thread shows the two methods you can use and what a report could look like depending on what/how you enter the information.

Heather, I can appreciate that, but I didn't mean to do anything wrong, and if Glen has done a lot of work, he will be my best buddy! I didn't mean to upset him and am still not sure why I have. Whatever I have done wrong, I didn't mean to, and am still not sure how I did it.

I would like some pointers so I don't do it again. Really, I am at a loss.

I think its because he spent rather a lot of time sorting out things like screen shots etc. for you and in response to the tone of your original posting treated it with some urgency.

Most people are usually around for a while after they post and if they post and go they normally leave a note saying that so people know. On this site the threads are very fast moving. If you post one day by the next day your thread could be several pages back.

Thanks Kate but I managed to remeber that.

I seem to have upset Glen. don't know why.

In case it helps, Margaret, if you go to the yellow shaded box with the man in the top hat on it, there is a link called "My threads". If you click on that it will show a list of all the threads you have started or added posts to and the most recent time that a post was added to the thread.

You would think that Genes would have a little help guide for things like this, but they don't seem to and these message boards are set out in a slightly more confusing way than other internet message boards I've seen. It took me ages to find and work out the "My threads" bit on here.

Dear Glenn,

Have I posted this request more than once? Sorry, I deal with different sites and don't have a good memory. I do duplicate requests sometimes. apologies. I only posted this latest message yesterday, I have looked for replies today. If I have missed an earlier posting, I am sorry. I have a sick mother to assist and things get stressed at times.

Sorry also, I don't understand your reference to posting and staying online, I don't always stay on line - should I? I don't expect immediate responses to my queries, some take days to arrive cos people have other things to do than read mine.

I seem to have upset you, not intended. I didn't expect anyone to rush around or spend lots of time on my behalf.

Yours is the only reply to this post, again more apologies from me, it would seem that I need to check previous posts and replies, and I haven't done. I will do that now.

Sorry to have caused you effort and apparently not appreciated it. Believe me, any effort is appreciated by me, I just haven't got the system right.

Please forgive me, and try to accept my ignorance of how to use the site properly.

LINKS AND PREVIOUS POSTS DELETED SUNDAY 18:08

It would be handy to know if you have come back to this

If i'm going to spend fifteen minutes of going through the process to get the screengrabs, another ten minutes editing and highlighting, then posting the info so it was available as soon as possible it would be nice to know if you have looked back here and if so found the info useful or not.

If you are posting a question and cannot stay online it would be appreciated if you said so in your initial post, that saves everyone rushing around trying to help when they need not do so.

Hi folks,

Trying to get organised. Have loaded all my BMD images onto FTM, now onto Censuses.

Re BMDs, FTM Help suggests putting them into the Scrapbook, but I felt it better to attach them as Sources to Facts. If that makes sense. Then any reports I do tell me I have got the image.
Have I done the right thing?

I read somewhere (?) that you only need to add a Census Image once, and attaching it to all members of the family can be done with one click and the file size is only increased by the one image. I can't find out how to do that. I have searched FTM help and done a test, and I can't see any way it can be done other than going to each individual and attaching the image separately. That is going to take hours, weeks, months. Anyone any advice please?

I have plenty of capacity on my hard-drive (130GB) but it can soon be used up!

I also would like to record the details of each census in the Notes or even Facts for each person on the census. Please, any tips on how to do that. Which is best? Notes or Facts?

I feel I am wallowing in uncertainty!

Meg
