WHY CAN I NOT FIND MY ANCESTORS IN THE CENSUS

I have found part of my family back to the 1700´s, thanks to articles found on the web. but I cannot find them in the census or births. I know they existed because they were quite famous in their day, (two being Sirs, and doctors). Was the upper class exempt from paperwork, or has the information available to us been `doctored´. Can anyone help me with info. I live abroad and am therefore unable to visit the libraries.

Karel, what names are you looking for and when? Could they have been mistranscribed?

Keith, the name is Earle, my family were Sr.James Earle, surgeon, Sr. Percival Pott surgeon, and Dr.Henry Earle, surgeon (all Sr. Barts.). I have looked up Earle without the e, but always zero

Also if they are the correct ones Alice found by googling, you will not find their births in the BMD index, that did not start until 1837. So it will have to be baptisms in the parish records.

Of course, the census are later, my mistake, but for the Bishop of Marlborough Alfred E. I found him immediately on the 1841 ages 14 at Eton, but nothing since. It always comes up as no match. And the births are now explained by Keith, thanks.Sorry but am very vry new at this.

I've noticed on a few censuses that some of the "upper classes" used to put their initials and surname - not their full forenames. Don't know why though but it might be wise to try searching just surnames.

Even Queen Victoria and Albert are on census returns so you should be able to find your ancestors.

Are we looking at London or other areas?

THANKS TO ALL WHO ARE TRYING TO HELP ME.
Alfred Earle was born 22/12/1827 in Newton Abbot, Devon. I have tried just now again the 1901 census stating birth place as Devon, also Newton Abbot, London, Wiltshire, I am getting very paranoid because I know I am doing something so stupid, being so new at this and finding such a great line in the family is unbelievable. I have back ache, eye strain and dream of lists of names on my laptop screen!! I found him on the 1841 census with just a random search, why doesnt he come up again?

Karen,

He is on the 1871 & 1881 census as Vicar of West Alvington, Devon.
There is also an interesting article I found by googling his name

Karen

I have now found him on the 1901 census as well. He is named as Alfred Marlborough as he was by then a Bishop .
He was Dean of Exeter in 1901.
His wife Frances is also on the census and his sister
Louisa Earle.

GREAT, GREAT, Thank you
Maureen. I never thought he would have a name change. You all have been just wonderful and patient with me. I didnt know he had a sister either. If I could I would send you all an Ensaimada from Mallorca, but alas I cannot, so just image you have all received one.
Thanks again, Karel.
