Hi
Im sure this has been asked loads but i cant seem to find it.
Where is the best place to order birth/marriage certificates?
Is it best to go to the local records office or does it make no diffrence to how much they cost ?
Thanks

Andrew

Local register offices (local to the event and NOT the records office).

Many offer an online order facility, most also offer the option of telephone orders as well as postal and personal applications. Cost is £7 and you don't need a GRO ref (in fact that just causes confusion). Ref checks don't incur an extra charge and if a cert cannot be issued then you will not pay anything.

No cert=No fee

Alternatively you can order online or by post from the GRO but theonline option is the cheaper of the two at £7.

A full list of local offices for England, Scotland and Wales, along with telephone, postal address, e-mail and web url details can be found on the wiki section of FTF.

The main British Isles page is split into countries, from the main page select either England, Scotland or Wales as needed then select the relevant county that applies.

Each county page has register office, records office and library details plus a list of useful hyperlinks to local (town and/or county) websites.

Many local offices won't issue marriage certificates unless you know the actual church.
